Installing hardwood floors is a major home improvement investment that adds beauty, value, and warmth to any space. However, even high-end materials like quality hardwood can suffer from poor results if the installation isn’t done properly. At Luminous Flooring, we’ve seen many homeowners in Arnold, MO, make avoidable mistakes that lead to costly repairs, gaps, warping, and unsatisfactory finishes.

Here are some of the most common errors people make during hardwood floor installation—and how to avoid them.

1: Skipping Acclimation

One of the biggest mistakes is not allowing your hardwood flooring to acclimate to the home environment. Wood expands and contracts with temperature and humidity, so letting it sit in your home for at least 72 hours before installation can help it adjust and reduce post-installation movement.

2: Ignoring Subfloor Preparation

Hardwood floors need a stable, level subfloor. Failing to check for moisture, clean debris, or repair uneven spots can result in creaky, uneven floors. Always inspect and prep your subfloor before installing hardwood floors.

3: Choosing the Wrong Type of Hardwood

Not all hardwood is created equal. If you’re installing in a high-traffic area or near moisture-prone zones like kitchens, you’ll need more durable or engineered options. Luminous Flooring offers a wide variety of quality hardwood suited to different home environments.

4: Incorrect Fastening Techniques

Using the wrong type of adhesive, nails, or staples can damage the planks or create visible bumps. It’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s installation guidelines closely, especially for tongue-and-groove systems.

5: Poor Expansion Gaps

Wood needs space to expand and contract. Failing to leave the proper expansion gap around the perimeter can lead to buckling and warping, especially in Missouri’s variable climate.

6: Not Learning How to Clean Hardwood Floors

Maintaining your new floors is just as important as installing them correctly. Learning how to clean hardwood floors without damaging the finish is vital to long-term durability. Avoid soaking with water and use pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaners.
